Saudi Arabia Work Visa: Step-by-Step Guide for Indian Workers

Updated 29 Sep 2026

Saudi Arabia is hiring on a huge scale for construction, oil and gas, healthcare, hospitality and mega projects such as NEOM and Riyadh’s new developments. For Indian workers, a Saudi work visa (employment visa) is the first step. The process involves more steps than the UAE – a medical, police certificate, skill verification for some trades, visa stamping and the Iqama after arrival. This guide walks you through each stage.

Step-by-Step Saudi Work Visa Process

1. Job offer and contract

You receive an offer letter and employment contract with your job title, salary, allowances, working hours and contract length. Your profession on the visa must match your qualifications – this matters for skill verification and professional licences.

2. Employer gets the visa authorisation

The employer obtains a work visa quota from the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development and issues a visa authorisation (often called “wakala”) to a licensed recruiting agency in India.

3. Medical test (GAMCA / Wafid)

You book a medical at a GCC-approved centre through the Wafid system. Tests include blood tests, chest X-ray and a general check-up. Being “fit” is compulsory for visa stamping.

4. Police Clearance Certificate

Apply for a PCC through Passport Seva. Some consulates ask for it to be attested.

5. Skill verification (for certain trades)

Saudi Arabia runs a Professional Verification / Skill Verification Program for many skilled and semi-skilled trades such as electricians, plumbers, welders, mechanics and technicians. You may need to pass a theory and practical test at an approved centre in India before your visa is stamped. Ask your employer whether your profession is covered.

6. Professional accreditation (engineers, doctors, nurses)

  • Engineers: registration with the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE)
  • Healthcare workers: licensing with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), including document verification and an exam

7. Emigration clearance (ECR passports)

If your passport is ECR, emigration clearance through eMigrate is mandatory. Always use a recruiting agent registered with the Protector General of Emigrants.

8. Biometrics and visa stamping

Your agent submits your passport, medical, PCC, contract and other documents to the Saudi visa centre. You give fingerprints and a photo, and the employment visa is issued.

9. Travel and Iqama

After arrival, your employer completes your medical registration, labour contract on Qiwa and your Iqama (residence permit). The Iqama is your main ID in Saudi Arabia – for bank accounts, SIM cards and travel.
