The United Arab Emirates is one of the most popular destinations for Indian workers. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah hire thousands of engineers, drivers, nurses, accountants, hotel staff and technicians every month. The good news is that the UAE work visa process is clear and fast when your employer is genuine. This guide explains how the UAE employment visa works, which documents you need, who pays the cost and how long it takes.

Types of UAE Work Visas
- Mainland employment visa: for companies licensed by the Department of Economy in each emirate. The work permit is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
- Free zone employment visa: for companies in free zones such as JAFZA, DMCC or Dubai Silicon Oasis. The free zone authority handles the permit.
- Green Visa: a 5-year self-sponsored visa for skilled employees, freelancers and investors who meet salary and education conditions.
- Golden Visa: a long-term (5 or 10 year) residence for investors, specialised talents and high earners.
- Domestic worker visa: for housemaids, drivers and cooks sponsored by a UAE family.
Most Indian job seekers come on a mainland or free zone employment visa, so this guide focuses on that route.
Step-by-Step UAE Work Visa Process
1. Get a genuine job offer
Your employer sends an offer letter that shows your job title, basic salary, allowances and working hours. For mainland jobs, the offer follows the MOHRE format and you sign it before the work permit is issued. Read the salary and job title carefully – they will appear on your labour contract.
2. Employer applies for the work permit and entry permit
The company applies for your work permit and employment entry permit. Once approved, you receive an e-visa (entry permit) by email. It usually allows you to enter the UAE within 60 days.
3. Emigration clearance (for ECR passport holders)
If your Indian passport is marked “Emigration Check Required” (ECR), your employer or recruiting agent must get emigration clearance through the eMigrate portal before you fly. ECNR passport holders do not need this step. Only use recruiting agents registered with the Protector General of Emigrants.
4. Travel to the UAE
Carry your passport, entry permit, offer letter and original attested certificates. Your employer usually books the flight.
5. Medical fitness test
After arrival you take a medical test at a government-approved centre (blood test and chest X-ray). Some employers also ask for a GCC-approved medical in India before departure.
6. Emirates ID biometrics
You give fingerprints and a photo for your Emirates ID at an approved typing centre or ICP / GDRFA centre.
7. Labour contract and residence visa
You sign the labour contract and your residence visa is issued. Since 2022 the UAE no longer puts a visa sticker in your passport – your Emirates ID is your proof of residence. Check your status on the ICP website or the GDRFA Dubai app.
Documents Required
- Passport valid for at least 6 months, with blank pages
- Passport-size photos with a white background
- Signed offer letter
- Educational certificates (degree or diploma) – attested for skilled and professional roles
- Experience letters
- Medical fitness certificate (done in the UAE)
- Emigration clearance, if your passport is ECR
Certificate attestation
For professional jobs (engineers, teachers, nurses, accountants) your degree usually needs attestation. The common route is: State HRD or notary → Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) → UAE Embassy in India → Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in the UAE. Start early, because this can take 1 to 3 weeks.
UAE Work Visa Cost: Who Pays What?
| Cost | Who normally pays |

UAE labour law says employers must bear recruitment and visa costs. If an agent asks you to pay large “visa charges”, treat it as a warning sign. You can estimate your own expenses with our free visa fee and total cost calculator.
How Long Does It Take?
In most cases the entry permit arrives within 1 to 3 weeks after you accept the offer. After arrival, the medical, Emirates ID and residence visa usually take another 1 to 3 weeks. Attestation and emigration clearance can add time, so prepare documents before you resign from your current job.
Red Flags: How to Avoid UAE Job Scams
- Someone asks for money to “confirm” the job or the visa.
- The offer letter has no company name, licence number or landline.
- You are asked to travel on a visit visa and “convert it later” without a written offer.
- The agent is not registered on eMigrate.
Always verify the company on its official website and read our guide on working on a visit visa before you travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a UAE work visa myself?
No. For an employment visa, the employer (sponsor) applies. Only self-sponsored visas such as the Green Visa or Golden Visa are applied for by the individual.
Is a UAE work visa free for Indians?
For the worker, it should be. The employer pays the permit, visa, medical and Emirates ID costs. You may pay for certificate attestation and personal expenses.
Can I change jobs on a UAE work visa?
Yes. Under current UAE labour law you can move to a new employer after following the notice period in your contract. The new employer applies for a new work permit.
Do I need an ECNR passport for the UAE?
No, but if your passport is ECR, emigration clearance through eMigrate is compulsory before you leave India.
